The BSA High School Conference

High School Conference 2023

Tracing the Trajectory: Enriching Your Experience in Higher Education

Workshops

  • We are hosting three workshops, one that is a student-led roundtable, the second being a professional soft skills workshop, and the third being financial planning.

  • The student-led roundtable is meant for high schools students to ask all the questions they often don't feel are addressed by university administrators and it is meant to provide an insightful experience of the day-to-day life of an undergraduate student. We will be having a plethora of students from different academic backgrounds.

  • Our second workshop is focused on developing professional soft skills . We will be creating a workshop about learning how to cold-call professors, learning how to network, and destigmatizing office hours. This will be a space that is catered to learning about the social capital one learns of when in a university.

  • Lastly, we will be leading a financial planning workshop focused on university administrators and colleges speaking about the importance of budgeting, finding cost-effective ways to survive university, and how to access scholarships.

High School Conference Mission

This year, the title of the conference is Tracing the Trajectory: Enriching Your Experience in Higher Education. Our idea for this year’s conference comes from the many insights the BSA’s Education and Outreach team has gained from speaking to numerous Black high school students and Black first-year undergraduates. We are building off of our Black Mentorships Initiative idea and incorporating it into the event. This year’s mission is to cultivate resources and professional skills for young black high school students to rely on and hear the authentic experiences of undergraduate black students. We want to nourish the minds of the next generation by providing them with the knowledge to succeed in academia.

Come and join us for a two day event that includes being immersed with the realm of academia and gifted with merch and complimentary breakfast and lunch. Sign up in the link below.

The BSA High School Conference is an initiative held annually in May with an attendance of about 400 high school students. The goals of the conference are; to burst myths on post-secondary education, to show high school students that people just like themselves are existing and thriving in a post-secondary environment, and act as a support system for students through workshops and building relationships with volunteers. This year we are holding the conference virtually through Zoom over three days: May 17th, 18th, and 19th 2022. Given the multiple changes we experienced in 2021, our theme for this year will be Vying for the Vision: Embracing Redirection and Unexplored Paths. The following is a breakdown of each day and topic of discussion.

AGENDA:

  • May 17th, 2022, 10:00AM-1:00PM (Day 1): “Navigating Academia While Black"

A discussion with black academics and professionals about student life”. This is an academic workshop where students will be able to hear from black students, professors, and academics in a variety of fields. They will learn about a plethora of academic opportunities and paths, in addition to hearing the experiences of some black students. There is also an opportunity for Q and A, where students will be able to ask the speakers questions. The discussion will be in a panel and moderated by an E&O director. In addition, there is an interactive activity in the workshop.

  • May 18th, 2022, 10:00AM-12:00PM (Day 2): “Financial Literacy - Viewing Money as a Tool!”.

This workshop will consist of a presentation on financial strategies for post-secondary life, followed by interactive elements to practice and apply these strategies.

  • May 19th, 2022, 10:00AM-12:00PM (Day 3): “Wellness in Post-Secondary: Striving to Thrive”.

Our last workshop, presented by a wellness expert, will discuss mental health surrounding the transition from high school into post-secondary and will include interactive strategies to help maintain student’s wellbeing during the transition process and once in post-secondary education. There will be an interactive activity in this workshop as well.
